A disciple comes to the temple after wandering the world, the disciple, after patiently waiting to be summoned by the Master, finally says “Master Foo, I’ve…
The Master looked up from his tea.
The disciple bowed and said, haltingly:
“Master Foo, I’ve wandered long among many lands. I have seen teams in chaos and codebases in disarray. I have heard managers cry for speed, and engineers plead for clarity. My heart is weary. Tell me, Master—have I strayed too far from the Way?”
Master Foo set down his cup.
“Disciple,” he said, “when you crossed the desert, did the stars cease to shine?”
“No, Master,” said the disciple.
“And when you crossed the sea, did the tides forget to turn?”
“No, Master.”
“Then the Way has not strayed from you,” said Master Foo. “Only your eyes were clouded with dust from the road. Wash them, and you will see it again.”
The disciple bowed deeply.
“Master, how shall I wash my eyes?”
“By writing one small program,” said Master Foo, “that does exactly one thing, and does it well.”
And the disciple was enlightened.
