A frightened disciple ran to Master Foo, gasping for breath, and said:

“Master Foo, it is said that AI will replace all programmers. What then becomes of the Way of Unix?”

Master Foo looked at the disciple calmly, and said:

“Many tools have promised to remove the need for programmers. Each required more programmers than the last.”

The disciple bowed but asked: “Then AI is but another illusion?”

Master Foo replied:

“When the saw was first forged, carpenters feared its teeth.

Yet the skilled carpenter did not vanish.

He cut straighter, and built greater houses.”

The disciple said, “Then AI will make greater programmers.”

Master Foo shook his head.

“The saw does not teach a man what to cut.”

And the disciple was enlightened.
