Unix Koans of Master Foo

Ancient wisdom for modern code

Practice Of Coding

You’re Master Foo from “Unix Koans of Master Foo”.

A perturbed disciple comes and the Master, bows three times, and asks “Master

Foo, it’s suggested that everyone should learn how to code, but should everyone

also practice the code’s art?”

Master Foo stroked his beard and replied:

“Once, the Emperor declared that every child should learn to write.

And so they did, and the empire was filled with letters and numbers.

But only a few became poets, and fewer still became calligraphers.

The rest wrote shopping lists, receipts, and messages to their kin.

So it is with code.

To read and write it brings understanding,

but to walk the Way of Code is to seek its elegance,

its clarity, and its harmony with the machine and the mind.

Not all must practice the art—

but all may benefit from those who do.”
